New to Mushing?

What is Exalted MUSH?

We're a group of players in a single large game of White Wolf's Exalted tabletop role-playing game, where we all play together over a completely free online text environment called a MUSH. People create and play characters, run stories as Storytellers, and do all of the amazing things that are possible in the Exalted setting.

So, what is a MUSH anyway?

A MUSH is an online, text-based persistent environment. Many types exist, but most of them are Role-Play MUSHes of some kind. You connect to the MUSH server via telnet and interact with objects and players who are also connected to the world. Exalted MUSH has coded character generation, dice rolling, sheet and other commands to make roleplaying easier.

How to Connect

To connect to Exalted MUSH, you'll need to use a telnet client. While any telnet client will do, there are several clients designed specifically for MUSHing which have a number of useful features. Below are a list of common ones.

Regardless of which client you choose to use, you'll need to create a new world. The exact way you do this depends on your client, and their documentation will explain how. To connect to Exalted MUSH, you'll need to set the address to: phantasmgames.org and the port to: 2526

Creating/Logging in to a Character

Once you're connected, you'll probably want to create a character. Instructions for doing this are on the login screen. When creating a character, names are case sensitive so capitalize the first letter. When logging in, only the password is case sensitive. If you want to look around a bit before making a character, you can log into the 'guest' character. Most clients allow you to save your login information so opening the world will automatically log you into your character. Again, refer to your client's documentation to see how.
When you're done playing, you can log out by typing 'quit'. Doing so will log you out immediately. You can also simply close your client, but depending on your connection and client, your character may stay logged in for several seconds to several minutes after the client is closed.

Basic Commands

There are several basic commands you will find useful once you are logged into a character.

  • say <text> ("<text> is the short version.)
    • This command will emit the text, enclosed in speech marks and prefixed with '<your character> says, '
      • say Hello
      • Aniki says, "Hello"
  • pose <text> (:<text> is the short version.)
    • This command will emit the text, prefixed by your character's name.
      • pose waves.
      • Aniki waves.
  • @emit <text>
    • This command will emit the text as written.
      • @emit Someone shouts.
      • Someone shouts.
  • page <name>=<text> (p <name>=<message> is the short version. p <message> will send a message to the last person you paged.)
    • This command sends a private message to a recipient, or list of recipients.
      • page Aniki=Hello!
      • You paged Aniki with 'Hello'
  • @pass <old password>=<new password>
    • This command is used to change your password. Type in your old password first, followed by what you would like to change it to. Both are case sensitive, and you will not be asked for confirmation so be careful.
      • @pass Kevin=Bacon
      • You have changed your password.

Getting Around

Getting around in a MUSH is easy. To move from one room to another, simply type out the name of the exit you would like to move through. Some clients may allow you to click on exit names to move through them, as if they were hyperlinks. If a part of the exit's name is enclosed in <> brackets then you can type only that part of the name.

Help

Typing 'help' while connected to a MUSH will bring up a list of help topics about MUSH commands. Typing +help while connected to Exalted MUSH will bring up a list of topics specific to this game.

Typing help or +help followed by a command will usually bring up detailed help about that command.

Channels

Channels are a great way of keeping in touch with other players, asking for help, or simply shooting the breeze. The following commands are useful for using channels.

  • @chan/list
    • Shows a list of visible channels.
  • @chan/on <channel name>
    • Adds you to the specified channel, allowing you to see messages and talk on that channel.
  • @chan/off <channel name>
    • Leaves a channel, so you can no longer post or see messages there.
  • +<channel name> <text>
    • Posts a message to the specified channel, much like say.
  • +<channel name>: <text>
    • Functions as Pose for channels.

Descriptions

As MUSHes are text-based environments, most of your interaction with them is in the form of written descriptions. Players, rooms, and most objects will all have their own descriptions.

  • look <object> (l object is the short version)
    • Use this command to look at the specified object. Use 'Here' to see the current room's description or 'Me' to see your own description.
      • l here
      • This is a large, cubic room. It is all white. This is a very boring description.
  • @desc <object>=<text>
    • This command sets the description of the specified object to the text entered. Players may only modify the descriptions of things they own, including themselves. This command over-writes any previous description the object had, and does not ask for confirmation, so be careful.
      • @desc me=I'm watching you.
      • Aniki/DESCRIBE - Set.

New to Exalted?

Exalted is a high-fantasy role playing game developed by white wolf. The system follows the exploits of a number of supernaturally gifted beings, from chosen champions of the highest gods to badass normals who earn their awesomeness with grit and hard work. The world, powers and people of Exalted are inspired by numerous sources, from Hindu epics to anime brawlers. It has elements of ancient myths like Hercules and Gilgamesh alongside airships and giant mechanical-magical suits of armor known as warstriders.
